You may not be aware, but your email address is also a fully functional email account - not just an email forwarding address. We're offering "real" @alum.mit.edu mailboxes because email forwarding alone is becoming unreliable due to the increasingly aggressive anti-spam protocols used by email providers. Forwarded email can look suspicious to email providers so there is the potential for it to be dropped, bounced, or flagged as spam.
If you're experiencing issues with email forwarding or missing emails, using the "real" mailbox would likely resolve the problem. We encourage you to consider using this account to manage your @alum.mit.edu email and move away from email forwarding to avoid the risk of missing important emails.
See this article on how to access your alumni Outlook account.
